Sandy McDade of Seymour, CT passed away on October 23, 2016 at her residence, Smithfield Gardens. She was born on July 23, 1943, the oldest of four children of her late parents, Terry and Stan Smalec. She lived in Boston and Vermont for many years before returning to Seymour. Sandy practiced as a psychotherapist until her retirement, having received her M. Ed. (Psychology) from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1976. Some of her professional positions included Associate Director, Career Development, Yale School of Management. In that position, she designed Careers in Public Service colloquia in Washington, DC, bringing together more than 100 prominent governmental professionals and heads of agencies with graduate students seeking both permanent positions and internships; Clinical Director at the Robert White School, Boston, MA, and as an Educational Consultant in the field of psychological assessment and counseling for educators, at Yale, Johnson State College, Johnson, VT, and other locations. Sandy was an expert photographer, developing her own photographs in a home lab, and was an avid follower of blue grass and folk music, both vocal and instrumental, playing the mountain dulcimer in her happy years living in Waitsfield, VT . In 1960, Sandy graduated from Seymour High School, where she played in the marching and concert bands. From an early age, Sandy enjoyed cooking, hiking, skiing, sailing, and traveling, making many friends, and sharing these pursuits with her family, being a devoted daughter, sister and aunt, as well as a loving cousin.
Her surviving siblings are Patricia Smalec Wohlford (husband, James Douglas) of Bethesda, MD, Stephen Smalec (wife, Jane) of Tampa, FL, and Michael Smalec (wife, Paula) of Cheshire, CT. Her beloved nieces and nephews are: Genevieve Wohlford Geibel, (husband, Jason) of Bellingham, WA, Katherine Wohlford (fiance, Christian) University of MD; John Thomas Smalec (fiancee, Mary) of Charlotte, NC, James Smalec, Boston University; and Brendan Smalec, Harvard Medical School and Lindsay Smalec, Bucknell University.
Funeral Services, which are private, have been entrusted to the Anthony V. Chepulis Funeral Home, 47 Washington Avenue, Seymour, CT. Interment will be in the family plot at North West Cemetery, Woodbridge, CT. To leave an online condolence please visit: chepulisfuneralhome.com
